Final Workshop of UNDP Project “Capacity Building for Clean Development Mechanism in Uzbekistan”

UNDP Project “Capacity Building for CDM in Uzbekistan” that was aimed at development of carbon finance in Uzbekistan, creation of proper infrastructure to implement CDM projects, and building capacity of national experts for preparation of technical, financial and legal documents on CDM, is now finalizing its 3-year activity.
Clean Development Mechanism – one of the instruments of the Kyoto Protocol under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UN FCCC) – provides developing and economy-in-transition countries with a chance of effective reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG) and at the same time gaining profit from the sale of Certified Emission Reduction (CER). Having 6 projects registered by UN Executive Board on CDM and launched their implementation, and the pipeline of 80 CDM projects at different stages of realization, Uzbekistan is an apparent leader of carbon financing in Central Asia today.
In course of its implementation the UNDP project “Capacity Building on CDM” has developed such critical papers as national procedures of CDM projects selection and approval, proposals on improvement of legal base for successful implementation of CDM projects, guidebooks on CDM financing, negotiations with foreign CDM partners, risk assessment and management of CDM projects and development of CDM Programme of Activities, altogether 11 publications.  The project efforts also resulted in creation and systematic maintenance of a website under the Designated National Authority (DNA) on CDM in Uzbekistan, which is recognized by over 90 countries as a reliable information and reference source on implementation status of CDM in Uzbekistan. In addition, the project outcomes include conducting of 24 training workshops, round-tables, case-studies led by international consultants, numerous on-job trainings, and the first Carbon Forum in Central Asia (2007). The total audience of project events amounted to about 550 people, of which 31 % was represented by women.
With a view of summarizing the activity of UNDP project on CDM capacity building and presenting results in carbon financing achieved by Uzbekistan, the project plans to conduct its final workshop. The workshop program includes reports of the national companies and international organizations regarding their experience on CDM implementation in Uzbekistan, presentation of lessons learned by the UNDP project during its implementation as well as the last project publications.
In the beginning of the workshop a 1-hour briefing for mass media is planned.
